CAROLS IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE

A few weeks ago, in a ceremony that has taken place every year since 1947, a mighty Norwegian Spruce was felled in a forest near Oslo. It is some 20 metres high and 50-60 years old, and is a gift from the people of Norway. Every year, they give a tree in thanks for the support they received from Britain during the Second World War.

It is now standing proudly in Trafalgar Square, beautifully decorated in Norwegian style with vertical strings of lights.

Carols will be sung around it almost every day until Christmas. Each day a different choir raises money for a different cause, from hospices and charitable services to medical research. Do join them.

HANDEL’S MESSIAH IN PICCADILLY

There are of course many magnificent venues in London with Christmas performances and services, including St. Paul’s, Westminster Abbey and Southwark Cathedral.

There are of course many magnificent venues in London with Christmas performances and services, including St. Paul’s, Westminster Abbey and Southwark Cathedral.

On a more intimate scale is St. James’ Church. Despite being located at the Circus end of Piccadilly, this haven of tranquillity in London W1 has a wonderful tradition of music-making throughout the year.

This month, it includes a performance of Handel’s Messiah, sung by a chamber choir and performed on period Baroque instruments. In the exquisite surroundings of a 17th century church designed by Christopher Wren, it is the perfect entrée to Christmas after the exertions of the year.

CHRISTMAS GLASSBLOWING: OPEN HOUSE

If your decorations could do with a little re-energising, London Glassblowing’s Christmas Open House is now in full swing. You’ll be warmed by their furnaces, along with mulled wine and mince pies, as glass masterpieces take shape before your eyes.

You can explore the studio and gallery, and on Friday 16th December there’s the chance to join a special workshop; here you’ll be able to blow your own creation – and then collect it two days later (having allowed your work of art to cool first). It’s a wonderful experience, and you’re sure to come away with some fabulous and original presents.

When: Until Christmas. Check for times and demonstrations.
